Being a Dad is hard!!!
Hi there- thanks for reading this if you are… it’d be pointless writing the thing if nobody reads it so thanks a lot.
So like the title says- being a Dad is certainly hard! Of course it’s rewarding and fulfilling- remember that feeling when your child walked for the first time?
They learnt that from you.
Nobody was born knowing how to walk- they learnt it from somewhere.
There are countless other moments that I could mention but really the day to day life of being a Dad or a parent in general is extremely hard work.
I don’t need to tell you what these things are- you know exactly what I mean. My key piece of advice here is simply this- perseverance- and this applies to many aspects of being a Dad- persevere- don’t give up.
If it doesn’t work today, maybe stop, have a breather, chill out, have a biscuit or a packet of crisps and then try again tomorrow. If it still doesn’t work after a few days, maybe think of a new strategy.
With this course of action you’re not admitting defeat, you’re adapting it- changing it slightly. They’re a funny breed kids and I know my little boy will steadfast refuse to do something if he doesn’t want to. Sometimes I ‘admit defeat’ although I find the term ‘take a breather’ more helpful, and try again the next day.
Getting stressed and shouty won’t help you or your child- trust me- I’ve tried on numerous occasions and I’ve always got the same result- crying- mainly my tears.
It isn’t easy to seemingly give in to your child’s whims and you don’t always want to feel they’re getting their own way, but in reality you aren’t giving in, you are adapting your strategy; adapting your parenting. Surely that’s better than getting stressed out?!
I just wanted to write my first post on this dad blog and look what happened- it’s written. I’m not going to give tonnes of advice on here- god knows I’m not qualified enough for that(!)- just going to share my life as a Dad and hope some of you people gain something from it- even if it’s just to see that someone else is going through what you are.
Thanks for reading. Steven
